Supervision:

• There is not much supervision, you work independently. However, if you ask for help you shall receive it where possible

Clinical Exposure:

• They make you spend the entire year of community service in OPD and casualty. No rotation into Maternity nor pediatrics. However, it is a small hospital, so the idea is that you get more exposure in OPD and casualty.

Social Scene:

• In a very small Town. Not much to do around there. The town is only 5 minutes drive from the hospital, so it’s not too bad. Fast food restaurants available is Debonairs, KFC, Honchos. Grocery stores : Spar, Shopprite, Boxer,. Clothing stores: Akermans,Miladys, Duns, Jet and Rage. However, it’s 1 hour away from Pietermaritzburg and two hours away from Portshepstone.

Additional Comments:

• The Accommodation is also very very poor. On my first week, I didn’t have a place to accommodate me. It wasn’t just me, the entire medical team (allied included) didn’t have accommodation. It was as if they had no idea they would be getting new staff members.
