No very academic, but you are responsible for teaching students and interns rotating at NDH for family medicine. Consultant ward rounds about 2/week. Able to do HIV diploma and DipObs
Supervision:
On call generally 2-4 Drs , so never completely alone. Always someone to ask, although they might also be comserve or MO. Consultant on call always available via phonecall.
Clinical Exposure:
HIV and TB +++, it is the district level hospital so you see basics. And refer on to the specialist as needed.
Departments worked in:
Emergency Department – “As comseve you can do Cas/OPD, Wards, Maternity( NVDs, C/S , Running labour ward and clinic) or Theatre ( basic anaesthesia for the C/S and local list like circums and abscesses – you have a clinic on a Tuesday and then do the list on a Tuesday and Thursday) On call you cover Paeds and Maternity and Casualties. No C/S facilities at night so all pts needing C/S get sent across to Pelonomi. While there I did my HIV diploma as it was easy and you get a lot of HIV and TB exposure. “
Social Scene:
The people in Bloemfontein make it a great place.
Additional Comments:
“I really enjoyed my time at NDH. Learned a lot about being a good ‘GP’ and all rounder. “
