Supervision:

• The hospital is run by chronic MOs. The best supervision was re maternity. Otherwise I usually rather got advice from the tertiary hospital.

Clinical Exposure:

• There is a busy labour ward, you cut cesars, do anesthetics (mostly spinal), paeds and general male and female as well as casualty. Exposure to lots of trauma. You manage cases that would probably have been referred in a different setting. Your referral hospital is Nelson Mandela academic hospital.

• There aren’t departments.

Social Scene:

• There is not much to do in Matatiele. There is a public pool and a small nature reserve to hike in. Some of the hospital staff do braai regularly. I spent a lot of weekend in the underberg or at the coast.

Additional Comments:

• Hospital politics were frustrating.
