Uniondale Hospital

CMSA Accreditations: None

Rural Allowance:

Doctors Quarters:

  • No comments yet.

Academics:

  • No teaching as there are no specialists or senior cover.

Supervision:

  • Little to none. You refer to George Hospital (about 110km away) and can call them if you really need advice. A family med specialist comes through occasionally.

Clinical Exposure:

  • You’ll see a bit of everything, a lot of HIV & TB cases. Emergencies are either MVAs or minor trauma cases, rarely any GSWs – I think the ambulances know not to bring them to UDH as it doesn’t have the required facilities – no theatre. There’s no labour ward so obs patients go to George for delivery (unless it’s too late and they present to casualty).

Departments worked in:

  • No specific departments so you see everything.

Social Scene:

  • Very small town, most people are Afrikaans. There are a few places where you can eat/grab a coffee and the basic shops for groceries, but not that much to do to be honest. If you get to know people in the town then you can make some great friends.

Additional Comments:

  • 2-3 comm serves usually allocated there each year, and George comm serves help out with overtime.
You don’t have access to lab investigations on call, only a blood gas machine, otherwise the lab is open during office hours. Xrays once a week and there’s an ultrasound machine for abdo ultrasounds so that’s a helpful skill to learn during your time there.
Calls aren’t too bad, you’ll probably see about 20-30 patients on a call. On call room is pretty decent.
